Kashish entered the room first, still in her post-wedding party outfit. Everything felt new to her, even though this farmhouse belonged to her own family, the room now seemed different, for it was the one she would share with her husband, Kabir. The space was minimally decorated, just as Kabir had instructed the planners, not to overdo anything. He wanted the room to be warm and comfortable, especially since they were still learning about each other.
She stood by the balcony, taking in the night air, when the door opened. Kabir stepped in, still dressed in his post-wedding party attire. The room glowed softly in the dim light, only a few lamps switched on. His eyes immediately found her silhouette against the breezy Kasol night. Without a word, he walked towards the balcony and stood beside her. Kashish had already sensed his presence the moment he entered. Together, they looked out at the serene silence of the cool mountain night.
Breaking the quiet, Kabir spoke, his gaze still forward:
"You looked beautiful today. You always do... but today, it was different."
Kashish turned to him, her lips curving into a soft smile. "Thank you," she whispered.
As he finally looked at her, the first thing his eyes caught was the deep red sindoor, perfectly adorning the center partition of her long, half-tied curls. His gaze then drifted to the mangalsutra its black and gold beads resting gracefully against her collarbone, glinting faintly in the light. Both were fresh, sacred signs of marriage that he himself had placed upon her only a few hours ago during the wedding rituals.
"Strange, isn't it? How a few hours can change everything. These small things, the sindoor, the mangalsutra suddenly feel like the biggest promises of my life." Kabir said looking at her. Now they both are facing each other.Â
"And do they scare you?" she asked, half-teasing, half-serious, testing the weight of his words.
"Scare me?" He let out a low chuckle. "No. If anything, they ground me, it feels... different. Feels real."
Kashish smiled shyly and said "Different in a good way?" Kabir chuckled "More than good. Overwhelming." "Overwhelming? You sound surprised you married me." Kashish teased. Kabir turned, amused and replied "Not surprised. I knew the rituals, but seeing you like this... it's sinking in." Kashish lowered her gaze and said "Same here, Everything feels new, even though I know this house, these walls. Today it feels like I've entered a new world altogether ."Â
"And in that world I'll try to make sure you never feel like a stranger. Promise" Kabir said gently. Kashish smiled, eyes glistening "You better keep that promise, Mr. Singhania." Kabir replied "Careful. I take promises very seriously Mrs Singhania."
They both shared a soft laugh, the sound echoing gently against the quiet night. For a while, they stood together in the balcony, letting the cool breeze and the soft glow of moonlight settle the rush of the day.
After a moment, Kabir glanced at her and said warmly,
"Chalo, let's go inside."
Once back in the room, Kabir went first to change. He slipped into a crisp white shirt and trousers, comfortable yet effortlessly elegant, very him.
When he returned, Kashish quietly went inside to change. She didn't choose anything dramatic or extravagant, unlike what most brides wear for their suhagraat. Instead, she slipped into a modest nightgown soft, simple, and comfortable. It was her way of keeping the air light and natural between them, without adding any weight of expectation.
As Kashish stepped out after changing, she found Kabir lost in thought. The moment his eyes caught hers, he quickly shifted his gaze , first to the couch, then to the bed, and finally back at her.
With a faint smile he said, "The couch is big enough... I can sleep there. You can sleep comfortably on the bed."
Kashish shook her head gently, her voice calm yet firm.
"It's okay, Kabir. We both can sleep on the bed... if you don't mind."
He chuckled softly, a little relief in his tone.
"I don't mind sleeping on the bed... but you should be comfortable."
She met his eyes with quiet courage.
"I married you, Kabir... now I have to get comfortable."
That made him smile, the tension easing between them. Together, they walked towards the bed.
Kabir asked lightly, "Which side do you prefer?"
"Left," she replied with a small smile.
Kabir nodded, settling on the right side, while Kashish took the left.Â
They both lay down on the bed, side by side, staring at the ceiling in silence. The quiet stretched for a moment until Kabir suddenly turned slightly towards her, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Kabir teased, "I hope you don't snore; I'm a light sleeper."Â Kashish smiled, turning her head. "Really? Then I should warn you, I talk in my sleep." Kabir replied "Great. First night and I'm already signing up for background commentary." Kashish laughed softly. "Don't worry, I'll keep it entertaining." They chuckled, the tension easing. After a pause, Kashish asked, "Alarm?" Kabir unlocked his phone. "I'll set it. What time?" Kashish: "Six a.m."Â Kabir, setting the alarm, confirmed, "Six it is."
Before sleeping they said goodnight to each other. both of them slept within a minute due to  exhaustion of the last few days finally caught up with them. Within a minute, their breaths evened out. The long wedding rituals, the endless ceremonies, the laughter and chaos of family it had left them drained.
The next morning was destined to be heavy with emotions and Kashish's bidaai. After breakfast, both families would part ways, returning to their homes in Shimla. What began with laughter and festivity was now drawing toward the poignant farewell every bride must face.
