38. Why Am I Here

Shimla's morning breeze carried a crisp freshness, wrapping itself around the pine-clad hills. At exactly 11 a.m., a sleek Mercedes rolled up in front of the shimla Neurology Department.

Kashish stepped out gracefully, dressed in a soft dark brown outfit . The moment she spotted her elder brothers waiting at the entrance, a smile curved her lips.

Walking towards them, she asked, "Bhaiya, why did you call me so urgently this morning and ask me to come to your Neurology Department? I had to postpone an important client meeting for this."

Before Samrath could reply, Shivansh pulled her into a warm hug and teased, "Meetings will always keep happening, Kashish. But today, it's more important that you're here."

Kashish frowned lightly, glancing from one brother to the other. "What work could I possibly have in Samrath bhaiya's Neurology Department? Why all this suspense?"

Samrath chuckled, slipping his hands into his coat pocket. "Will you just keep asking questions, or are you going to walk with us?"

She narrowed her eyes playfully but followed them as the three siblings made their way to the third floor of the Shimla Neurology Department, where something awaited her.

Note (This neurology department is in shimla. where all the neurologist and neurosurgeon in the shimla has built to operate the brain related surgeries at affordable prize.)

As the three of them walked into the third floor conference room, Kashish's eyes scanned the space filled with neurologists and neurosurgeons. But the moment her gaze landed on Kabir seated at the table, her heartbeat stumbled. He hadn't mentioned he would be here, and the sight of him calm, handsome, eyes fixed on her was the last thing she expected.

Kabir too felt his breath hitch. In her elegant dark brown dress, with sindoor in her hairline and mangalsutra resting at her just below the collor bone, she looked every bit his wife his pride.

He rose from his chair immediately "Welcome," he said softly. "You knew I was coming?" she asked, surprise and a touch of complaint in her voice. "Yes," he admitted." Then why didn't you tell me first?" Before Kabir could answer, Shivansh cut in with a chuckle, "You husband and wife can discuss all this at home. Not here." The four of them burst into light laughter, and then Kabir, walked around to take a seat opposite Kashish. On one side of the table sat Samrath Kashish and  Shivansh, Kabir deliberately placed himself across from them, his gaze never straying from her.

Soon, their cousin Dr. Sayoni Diwan Raichand entered and joined them, settling beside Shivansh. Kashish, feeling slightly out of place among so many doctors, leaned in and whispered, just loud enough for Samrath, Shivansh, and Sayoni to hear

"Is this something related to medicine? You all do remember I'm an architect, right? Tell me honestly, why have I been called here?"

Samrath smiled and slid a folder across to her. "This is my new project under the Shimla Neurology Department, the Neurorehabilitation Techniques program. And it's under your name. Today's meeting is about this, so of course you had to be here. You're not just a guest, you're the esteemed guest of this department today. Consider it my gift for you."

Kashish blinked in shock. "But bhaiya this is your dream project. It should carry your name, not mine." Samrath shook his head gently. "I wanted it to be under your name. I want your presence stamped into my department."

Sayoni nudged her with a grin, "Relax, Kashish. For once, enjoy being the center of attention. It suits you."

The four of them laughed, while Kabir sat silently, eyes trained on his wife and the bond she's having with her brother's and sister. Throughout the discussion, he didn't once look away from her, watching her expressions, her awkwardness, her little smiles. When Kashish finally turned to meet his gaze, her eyes questioned him silently, Did you know about this? Kabir gave a slight nod "yes."

Just then, the Head of at Shimla Neurology departmnet, Dr. Kukreja, a 55-year-old neurosurgeon, walked in. Everyone rose to greet him. The meeting began, the table filled with doctors discussing medical terms, strategies, and research.

The meeting began. When the time came, Kashish the only non-doctor in the room signed the official documents, sealing a project worth 200 crores under her name, without fully grasping the medical intricacies behind it. Samrath explained what he could, but most of it slipped away from her architect's mind.

And Kabir noticed. He watched her struggling to follow, her brows knitting in confusion, her innocent effort to understand a world that wasn't hers. To him, she looked endearingly lost. He noticed how her brows knit in confusion, how she fidgeted with the pen, how her smile wavered when the conversation grew too Neurology oriented. To him, she looked adorably out of place yet still dignified, still radiant. And he thought, with a tug in his chest, Even in a room full of doctors and surgeons, my wife is the only one I can't take my eyes off.

As the meeting went on, Kashish kept leaning towards her brother Shivansh, whispering questions about the medical jargon being thrown around. Half the time, she was making faces at the difficult terms, half the time she was absent mindedly twirling her pen, scrolling phone, clearly not too interested.

Kabir, on the other hand, was supposed to be paying full attention. He was the research head after all. But no, the more Kashish fidgeted, the more his eyes were pulled towards her. And then, without realizing, her gaze met his.

Kabir softly asked, "What?" Kashish blinked, shook her head quickly and muttered, "Nothing."

For the first time, something as crucial and fascinating as neurology failed to hold Kabir's focus. His wife had all of it.

Noticing this, Kabir's colleague Dr. Pratik smirked and teased, "Kabir, you can keep staring at your wife later in your bedroom. There you'll have all the time in the world. For now, kindly focus on Neuro rehabilitation techniques. And don't forget, you're the research head of this department."

Kabir cleared his throat, straightened in his seat, and forced himself to shift his focus back to the meeting notes, though his mind stubbornly lingered on Kashish's innocent expressions.

As the meeting wrapped up and everyone spilled out of the conference hall, Kabir lingered near the door, waiting until Kashish joined him.

"Heading back to the firm?" he asked casually. "Yes," she nodded, adjusting her bag. "Lunch first," Kabir said firmly, not really leaving it as an option "Come, we'll do it together." She tilted her head, pretending to think, then smiled softly. "Okay." Turning to her brothers Shivansh and Samrath, and to Sayoni, she said a quick goodbye. They teased her with knowing looks, but she brushed it off gracefully.

Since the hotel was nearby, Kabir led her towards his car. Opening the door for her, he waited until she slipped in before circling to the driver's seat. Kashish settled in quietly, her calm presence filling the space.

As they entered the hotel, Kabir instinctively pulled a chair out for Kashish. She smiled faintly, slipping into the seat as he joined her. He handed her the menu card, something he always did. Kabir never ordered first, he always let her decide.

They chose some light dishes, and once the waiter left, Kashish leaned forward, eyes narrowing slightly. "Why didn't you tell me about today's meeting?" she asked softly.

Kabir exhaled, leaning back. "I got a call from Samrath bhaiya yesterday. He specifically told me not to tell you. Remember when I got that call in the evening, just when you were giving me gifts? That was his call."

Kashish pursed her lips but nodded. "Alright but next time, you'll tell me everything."

Kabir smiled gently "Yes."  Because this is the first time kashish has actually asked something from him. And he liked it tucking a smile on his face.

Then, mischief glinted in his eyes. "But really coming in clueless, not knowing more than half the terminology, and still signing a 200 crore project like a queen and on top of that, getting the project under your name. God, this is exactly how I want my life to be."

Her jaw dropped in mock offense. "Was I looking that clueless?" Kabir chuckled, then blurted without thinking, "You were looking... cute."

The word slipped out, and he immediately realized it, his gaze dropping for a second.

Sensing the tension, Kashish grinned and leaned closer. "By the way, I do know some terms of your neurology. Like Reflex, memory, Nerves" she rattled off a couple of medical words dramatically. They both burst into laughter, their voices carrying a quiet warmth across the table. They were halfway through lunch when Kashish's phone buzzed. It was Jiya.

Jiya said "Chairperson of Visionary Vista, don't forget the Mumbai clients are arriving and where are you?" Kashish smiling replied  "I'm with Kabir, having lunch." Jiya teasing "Ohho husband-wife time" Kashish quickly replied, "I'm coming," and cut the call before Jiya could continue teasing. Kabir raised an eyebrow. "Jiya?" Kashish replied "Yes, the Mumbai clients were supposed to come in the morning, but I postponed it to afternoon because Samrath bhaiya had called me to the neurology department." Kabir continued saying "Alright. When will you come home?"  Kashish replied "Maybe by 5. And you?" Kabir said "Around 7."

Their lunch ended soon after. Kabir paid the bill, and they walked out together. He drove her to the neurology department where her car was parked. Stopping there, as kashish went towards her car, Kabir politely opened the door for her. Kabir said gently "Drive safely."

Kashish gave a small smile, nodded, and left. Kabir stood there for a moment, watching her car disappear into the  gates. He then headed towards his Hospital for his scheduled work.

✨✨

When Kabir came back from the hospital, he knew Kashish would probably be in the kitchen. He walked toward the dining area and saw his brothers Jay, Riaan, Shourya, and Raiansh still in their work outfits, just home from their offices.

Soon Diya entered, trying to handle Kiara's tantrums. "Mumma, I don't want to go to dance class," Kiara complained.

Diya gave her a sharp look. "Kiara, you don't want to go to school, you don't want to go to dance class, what exactly do you want?" Kiara ran toward Raiansh and tugged his hand. "I want to go on a jungle safari with Raiansh chachu, he promised me"

Piyali came from behind, teasing, "First ask your chachu if he even remembers his promises." Raiansh, caught off guard, smiled and said, "Kiara, tell your Piyali chachi that I remember everything." Piyali shook her head knowingly, she could see he had forgotten.

"Okay, this Sunday for sure," Raiansh promised. Kiara squealed with excitement and ran off to play.

Just then, Kashish entered with Kabir's black coffee. Paridhi followed her, smiling mischievously.
"Kabir, how are you liking the black coffee made by your newly wedded wife?"

Kabir took the cup from Kashish shyly, his eyes softening. "It's heaven," he said, taking a sip. Kashish sat down beside him quietly. Tanushrei walked in with coffee for Shourya and teased, "Hmm, now no one remembers the taste of my coffee." Kabir chuckled, "Bhabhi, I've given you rest. One less work for you, so thank me for that."

Riaan smirked, "Oh, now he has also learned how to joke." Jay added, "That's Kashish's influence." And the whole room burst into easy laughter

✨✨

After dinner, when they entered their room, Kashish was placing her files neatly into her bag marked "AIIMS Palliative Care and Cancer Centre." Kabir, lying lazily on the bed, noticed the tag and said with a stretch, "Oh right, I almost forgot tomorrow's the Phase Three AIIMS project meeting, isn't it?"

Kashish smirked and replied, "So, you do forget things. I already got the reminder mail from AIIMS." Then, teasing him further, she added with a mischievous glance, "But they don't send reminder mails to you, do they?"

Kabir chuckled, instantly catching her mood. "I don't usually need reminder mails but since I forgot today, maybe I should start asking for them too."

Kashish shook her head at his playful tone, turned off the lights, and settled down on her side of the bed, still keeping distance between them . She adjusted her pillow and asked softly, "When will you be coming to AIIMS tomorrow?" "I've got morning rounds at 8 in the hospital," Kabir replied, rolling slightly to face her. "After that, I'll head there by 11." And you he asked,  She said "I'll go to the firm first, then Jiya and Aryan will join me. We'll also be there by 11," Kashish said, her voice slowing as sleep started tugging at her. They exchanged a quiet, warm "Goodnight"
